    The Herb

Among Ayurveda’s great respiratory herbs, Kantakari stands as one of the fiercest protectors of breath and movement.

Its thorn-covered structure reflects its very nature — penetrating, clearing, and defensive. Ancient Ayurvedic physicians turned to Kantakari where heaviness, congestion, obstructed respiration, excess Kapha, and stagnant Vata disturbed the body’s vital flow.

Known classically as Vyaghri — “the tigress” — the herb was revered for its powerful ability to break through accumulated Kapha and restore ease within the respiratory channels.

As one of the sacred Dashamoola herbs, Kantakari occupies an honoured place within classical Ayurvedic formulations associated with respiratory balance, digestive clarity, and Vata-Kapha equilibrium.

Its warming and sharp qualities made it especially valued during cold, damp, congested, and sluggish seasonal conditions.

ASLI AYURVEDA offers Kantakari in its most authentic form — carefully harvested whole herb and fruits, naturally sun-dried, and preserved without additives or artificial enhancement.

This is not merely a thorned plant.
This is Ayurveda’s philosophy of clearing obstruction and restoring the freedom of breath.

    What the Ancient Texts Say

    Charaka Samhita

    Kaṇṭakārī kaṭu tiktā kaphavātavināśinī ।
    Śvāsakāsaharā prōktā dīpanī śūlanāśinī ॥

“Kantakari is pungent and bitter, traditionally associated with balancing Kapha and Vata, supporting respiratory ease, digestion, and reduction of discomfort.”

Charaka especially honours Kantakari for its respiratory and Kapha-clearing qualities.

    Bhavaprakasha Nighantu

    Vyāghrī kaṭukā tiktā śvāsakāsavināśinī ।
Kaphaghnī dīpanī prōktā vātaśūlaharāpi ca ॥

“Vyaghri (Kantakari) is pungent and bitter, traditionally associated with respiratory wellness, Kapha reduction, digestive activation, and balancing Vata discomfort.”

The classical texts consistently describe Kantakari as a herb of respiratory clarity, warmth, and movement.
